Here I am this morning reeling from learning that my fellow Bostonians stood by and watched an 82-year-old woman die in an escalator accident yesterday. I'm including the front-page article from The Boston Globe. The article tells you how utterly self-absorbed people are these days. They walked by her, walked over her, and generally ignored the seriousness of the situation. In other words, they did everything but help someone dying before their eyes. Amazing.

Only four people chose to assist, one was a resident of Framingham and his son, who called for a knife, scissors or fingernail clipper so that they could free her. Instead of responding, people took the high road. So absorbed have we become with ourselves and our own discontent that we can't be bothered helping someone whose life is hanging in the balance.

One eyewitness spoke on the condition of anonymity so he wouldn't become part of the case. Unbelievable. Chumps like this exist everywhere and the economic situation in this country brings out both the worst and the best in people. It's pretty clear what was on display yesterday.

The good samaritan who tried to help said, "I just felt they all let this woman down…" Indeed. And themselves as well. They should be hanging their heads in shame. It should be difficult for them to see their reflections in the mirror today. I have a feeling, however, that they will find a way to rationalize their disgraceful behavior.

Massachusetts continues to pave the way to equality

Just as it led the charge for same-sex marriage rights, so will Massachusetts lead the charge to repeal the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). On March 3, Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD) filed a lawsuit in Federal District Court in Boston challenging the constitutionality of Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act. This is the first, concerted multi-plaintiff legal challenge to DOMA and has been filed on behalf of eight married couples and three surviving spouses from Massachusetts who have been denied federal legal protections that are available to spouses.

Because of Section 3, legally married same-sex couples are excluded from any federal law or program that other married couples benefit from. Same-sex couples are denied spousal protections in Social Security, the federal income taxm federal employees' and retirees' benefits, and in the issuance of passports.

In an upcoming report by the Center for American Progress, Ben Furnas and Josh Rosenthal state that the average same-sex couple "will be denied over $8,000 a year in Social Security survivor benefits upon the death of the high-earning spouse after retirement."

GLAD argues that Section 3 of DOMA is unconstitutional because it violates the federal constitutional guarantee of equal protection and that it is "an unprecedented intrusion by the federal government into marriage law."

Ever since the mid 80's when Denver Wastewater Department (WMD) engineers (under the direction of Joe Barsoom) disconnected the storm sewers from the sanitary sewer water treatment system the e.coli and fecal coli bacterial contamination in NW Denver watershed has increased and WMD has been trying to keep their blunder hidden from everyone. This has culminated in October of 2007 when the largest fish kill ever occurred at Sloans Lake (The City & County of Denver's press release instead attributed the cause to a sudden cold snap that killed algae in the lake causing the dissolved oxygen levels drop to zero.)

Because of the WMD' Engineers actions in the 70's and 80's the residents of Denver have had to spend tens of millions of dollars on auxiliary programs designed to just contain water pollution levels within acceptable limits….. Millions of dollars more have been spent on replacements of the sewer taps connections…. as well as countless millions of additional water treatment costs. Now WMD engineers propose to give tens of millions of dollars more of our money to their contractors to create "bio-filters" in order to naturally cleanse stormwater to correct the mistake they made 20 years ago.

This all because since the disconnection of the storm sewer from the treatment system storm waters run into the creeks lakes and S. Platte river untreated carrying with it pet & wild life feces as well as commercial fertilizers as well as sewerage escaping from the deteriorating sewers…. So now WMD has declared that stormwater is the major contributor e.coli and fecal coli contamination….but their keeping the sewer condition secret.

The whole truth instead is that the reason behind WMD Engineers disconnecting the storm sewers in the first place was systemic failure due to poor design of the sanitary sewer mains. From 1975 to 1990Congress gave $90 billion to solve this problem … Where did all the money go?…mostly into contractors pockets.. Now because the problem has gotten worse Denverites will have to spend millions more…

These same engineers live in homes in exclusive neighborhoods.. get paid as consultants for the very firms that they've hired as contractors…go on lavish junkets while working for WMD and have built their resumes for when the leave WMD. What does this all have to do with Insituform Technologies and rehabilitation products? …look for the next Denversewerscam posts

The Boston Globe fighting an uphill battle

The beloved Boston Globe is feeling the pinch. Although it has undergone several staff reductions during this decade, the Boston Phoenix is reporting that this will be the first time it has targeted the newsgathering staff. It plans to cut 50 newsroom and editorial-page jobs, preferably through buyouts or possibly by layoffs (among both union and non-union employees).

The Globe's management is asking for volunteers to give up their jobs in a depressed economic climate that experts say the country could take years to recover from.

Sewer Failure & Water Pollution Soruces Educate Yourself First

Sources of Infiltration & Inflow

There are two parts to a sanitary sewer system the municpal sewer main and the private lateral.

Thre are two parts to the private lateral the UPPER & LOWER lateral.

Inflow is surface water aka (run off or non poin source pollution) that enters into the collection/treatment system through Storm Sewers, Manhole covers , and the upper private lateral sewer. This drawing depicts a "combined" sanitary& storm sewer system. Denvers system was seperated in mid 80's.

Infiltration is groundwater entering into the sewer main and lower private lateral through joints and cracks and breaks in the line.

EXFILTRATION: Exfiltration is sewerage escaping from the sanitary sewer contaminating the ground water. It generally occurs in the dry season when groundwater level is low and the water presure inside the pipe exceded that outside the pipe forcing sewerage out. Infltration is just the opposite forcing water into the joints during the wet season. Exfiltratio is esspecially dangerous in stystems like Denver's where the strom sewer has been disconected from the sanitary sewer and water treatment system. The sewerage that escapes from the sanitary sewer infiltrates into the storm sewer ( of the same multi jointed contruction an burried in the same trench) and end up in lakes and creeks.

The earliest sewers those intstalled around 100 years ago had short pipes length from 2.5 to 3 feet long. They were acctually designed to allow "infiltrtion" about 2000 to 4000 gallons per acre. This becuase population density was low and the gravity sewer system needed the addition flow in order for sewer to function to is primary desing purpose…to carry sewerage away. The early sewer mians had no joint sealing at all. They were laid in "native" bedding or dirt that came out while digging the trench and this scenario was ideal for sewer failure. But this was in the era when people went around in horse and buggy and there were no treatment plants nor EPA. The only way to discover a breakge was by a back up or a sinkhole and then they just patched it. In other words sytemic sewer faiulre was inherant to these systems. As time went on because it was the leaky joint that was the cause of all the problem, they started using jute, bitumen, to seal the joints and pipes got longer 5 feet and even 10 feet long and factory installed ruberized seals were added. However these sealing methods proved not to last due to sufide corrosion. However ven in the earliest intalstions the tap connection was sealed round with concrete;making it the most secure joint in the system. In fact statictist show that swere mains with 2.5 to 3 foot pipes have a joint failure rate of 70% while for all lengths of sewer main the tap failure rate is only 30 to 40%. Staticts show that sewer mains fail before lateral connections do and this is one of the many myths WMD code enforcemtn investigators propegate.

One of the many other myths that WMD propegates is that Vitrified Clay Pipes (VCP) gets old and rots and that why it breaks. Instead Vitrified Clay is exactly what is sounds like..Vitro( Glass) Clay (an inert materail) that has been baked in a high temperature kiln illminating all organic materail. No organic material no rotting…Porcelain like would be a better discritpion and even hold up to acids very well. VCP pipe walls are about 1/2 inch thick more than enough to withstand the forces imposed on it when burried. It purposly overbilt this way to with stand breakage during tranport and instalation. These sewers were desinged to have a desing life of 100 years even with thier leaky joints. Once again that was back when the "primary design function "was to just be a conduit through which sewerage was carried away.

VCP is the best sewer pipe material know to man for the past 5 thousand years. It only draw back is that it is very expensive compaired to PVC. Design life and Desing function are symular but different. To clear this up since 1975 the sewers desing funtion is no longer just to be a conduit through wich sewerage is carried but also to protect humands and the envorment. Thus new standards require verifiable water tight seals on all joints and connections. Granular rock bedding is now used because it's a medium through wich groundwater drains away quickly and it cant be carried into the sewer pipe by infiltrating groundwater through leaky joints as in these older instalations.

This is the perfect entro into the real reason VCP pipes break. The largest and most important phisical structrure in the sewer system is the "support soil". eg the bedding and back fill. It is the equal pressure that the support soil exerts upon the burried pipes that keeps them allined and intact. When instead this equalibrium is distabilized through loss of the support soil due to infiltration the presures on the pipes become unequal causing the pipes to crack then holes to form and eventually cave in. NOTHING ESLE CAUSES PIPES TO BREAK AND IT ALL STARTS AT THE JOINT.

This process takes years sometimes decades to complete. The prooff to that is that in Denver we have about 200 miles of sewer that is at or near 100 years of age. The prblem is that the ASCE dicoverd that because of heavier vihicles and hevier traffic loads these sewers are failing at rate never seen before. This is infact why the EPA Clean Water Act was passed in 1972 becuase of Systemic Sewer faiure was causing water pollution. In 1975 congress approved the EPA 201 grant program which from 1975 to 1990 gave $90 billion with a B…to public utilities to fix thier sewers. But most of the money went toward program that only increased the problem and was eaten up by contractors. More on this later).

The problem that this time factor poses for people is that there can be a large hole and even a sinkhole forming in the street or alley and it can go unoticed for years until that day theres ad caveing backing up the seewer of the surface collapses under the weigh of a a passing car or truck. Because the support soil is compacted a sewer pipe with even a large hole in it the soil function perfectly carrying away sewerage for years without a hitch. Voids are created but dont collaspes The surroding dirt wont immedialty collapse and this can contiue for years. In fact many a pot hole is actually forming sinkhole with a leaky pipe joint underneath. However when crack appears at the joint this means that there are voids outside of the pipe and the structural integrity of the suppor soil pipe system has been compromised. WMD code investigators use this time factor to thier advantage and to your disadvanate. That is if there is a crack or break near your service entrance they will only show you a picture of it …if they do that at all. They will never show you the sewer main where there will be cracks and breaks guranteed!! What they will show you guranteed is a code vilation notice that gives them the right to fine you $10,000 per day for every day you dont comply with thier orders.

This is enough to scare anyone into subbmission. By law you have to follow their instructions or they will catapult you into a process from which there is no recovery or appeal. Someone else will decide how much of that fine you'll have to pay not wheather or not you have to pay it. But if you do comply with thier orders you actually destroy the evidence you'll need to file a claim. They wont give you the historic video inspectons of the sewer main. So what has to been done first of all is video inspect your sewere line whatch it personally and keep a copy of the footage. Get at least three plumbers oppinons . While you excavate and replace the pipe take pictures and have a qualfied engineer there during the excavation. more on this later.

Hello, folks. Just passing through tonight. I've been tied up the past couple of days but I didn't want to forget to post the final two installments of The Boston Globes's Ted Kennedy series.

Despite his detractors, Kennedy has turned his life around and has hung around long enough to have been named the 'lion of the Senate.' His office has written some 2,500 bills, of which 300 have become law. More than 550 bills that Kennedy has co-sponsored since 1973 (the first year co-sponsors were listed on bills) have been enacted. He is well respected on both sides of the aisle, even sharing a close friendship with GOP stalwart Orrin Hatch. Enjoy.

Kennedy hits rock bottom; then regroups

I'm up late tonight when I had planned to hit the hay early, but I wanted to take the time to post Part 5 in this series. Throughout much of the eighties, Kennedy's personal life was in a shambles, and it began to adversely affect his political life. Then he met Victoria Reggie, a DC lawyer and daughter of one of his lifelong friends.

Reggie was different than Joan and the other Kennedy women in that she was politically astute and shared his politics. She brought out a side of Kennedy that many never knew he had, and he doted on her children.
